I presented at the ATIA Conference in 2020 on Accessible PDF Reading alongside my colleague and friend, Jule Ann Lieberman. ATIA, the Assistive Technology Industry Association, aims to represent the assistive technology industry to provide the best products and services for people with disabilities. Their annual conference takes place in Florida. During our session, we focused on best practices for creating accessible PDF documents to enhance user experience for individuals with various disabilities. We addressed common barriers and demonstrated effective strategies for utilizing assistive technology to navigate and interact with PDF content.

The feedback from attendees was encouraging, highlighting the increasing need for accessible resources in educational settings. My collaboration with Jule Ann not only enriched the presentation but also reinforced the importance of teamwork in advancing inclusive educational practices. This experience fueled my passion for advocating for accessible education through technology.

November 6, 2019: Presented at the PEAC Conference on Including Students through the Use of Accessible Instructional Material

I created a presentation titled Including Students Through the Use of Accessible Instructional Material to emphasize the importance of designing and selecting educational content that supports all learners. The presentation introduced the concept of Accessible Educational Materials (AEM) and demonstrated how formats like digital text, audio, and braille can provide equal access to the curriculum.

November 6, 2019: This presentation is one of the many presentations I created for conferences and workshops in Pennsylvania while serving on the Assistive Technology team at TechOWL (Technology for Our Whole Lives) at the Institute on Disabilities at Temple University.

I created a presentation on the importance of including all students through the use of Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM), now referred to as Accessible Educational Materials (AEM). The presentation focused on how educators can ensure equitable access to curriculum by selecting and implementing materials that are designed to be perceivable and usable by learners with diverse needs. It highlighted the legal foundations of AEM, practical steps for sourcing accessible content, and the role of technology—such as screen readers, text-to-speech tools, and digital formats—in supporting students with print disabilities.

The presentation featured a variety of digital tools—including scheduling apps, visual timers, note-taking software, and task management platforms—designed to enhance executive functioning skills in educational settings.

In 2019, I had the privilege of presenting at the National Down Syndrome Conference on the topic Assistive Technology in the IEP. This presentation focused on how assistive technology can be effectively integrated into Individualized Education Programs to support students with Down Syndrome in accessing the curriculum and achieving their educational goals. I provided practical guidance on identifying appropriate tools, writing measurable goals, and ensuring that technology supports were implemented consistently. The session aimed to empower families and educators with strategies to advocate for inclusive, technology-driven supports that promote student independence and success.

As an adjunct professor at Arcadia University, I had the opportunity to co-teach a graduate-level course on assistive technology alongside Stacy Phillips, M.Ed. Together, we developed a series of engaging and informative modules designed to meet the needs of both asynchronous and synchronous learners, depending on the semester format. The course focused on equipping graduate students with a strong foundation in the principles, tools, and implementation strategies of assistive technology to support diverse learners. This presentation, Assistive Technology for Learning, is one of our collaboratively designed modules and is a prime example of how we integrated current research, practical applications, and interactive components to ensure students could apply their learning in real-world educational settings.
